Washington, DC – In response to the Biden administration’s executive actions to combat the domestic and international threat of climate change, Foreign Policy for America released the following statement:
Foreign Policy for America applauds the Biden administration for its swift and meaningful action toward tackling our climate crisis in its first week. By elevating climate change to the foreign policy and national security priority that it is, and by ensuring our decision- and policy-making processes are informed by science, the Biden administration is setting the tone for a bold new approach to climate change.
After four years of a White House that ignored science, this administration’s suite of domestic actions paired with its clear intent to re-engage with the world is truly a cause for optimism. We’ve been heartened to see the focus on climate in senior administration positions, in particular the appointment of John Kerry as Special Presidential Envoy for Climate, a position that noticeably also holds a role on the National Security Council. The Biden administration’s intent to host a Climate Leaders’ Summit on Earth Day this April, coupled with last week’s rejoining of the Paris Agreement, signals to the world the U.S. will no longer be absent from the table as the world confronts the climate crisis.
“President Biden’s swift action on climate change in his first week reflects accurately the centrality of the climate crisis and the importance of getting out ahead of it,” said Foreign Policy for America Executive Director Andrew Albertson. “The Biden administration is acknowledging today that, as one of the world’s leading greenhouse gas emitters, we as Americans have the responsibility to lead the world in confronting this issue, with action at home and abroad. President Biden also understands the opportunity we have today to create good paying jobs – at a time when our country needs them – by investing in the new clean energy economy. The actions the President announced today will have a powerful positive impact on the security of American families, and we welcome the administration’s continued bold leadership on climate change.”
