FP4A Statement on the Death of Yahya Sinwar

Washington, D.C. – Today, Foreign Policy for America released the following statement on the elimination of Yahya Sinwar, the leader of Hamas:

Yahya Sinwar was the mastermind of the October 7th attacks on Israel, which claimed the lives of more than 1,200 people – the deadliest day for the Jewish people since the Holocaust. He was responsible for the deaths of countless Israelis, Palestinians, Americans, and the citizens from more than 30 countries. The world is a better place with Sinwar gone.

Now, we must collectively seize on the moment to bring this war to a close. Hamas’ military and political capabilities are at their lowest in decades, and Sinwar’s death removes a significant obstacle to establishing peace in both Gaza and the entire region. The United States should redouble its efforts to achieve three goals: a full ceasefire and an end to the cycles of retaliation that are inflaming the region, and which have now resulted in the deployment of additional U.S. military servicemembers; the release of the remaining hostages; and a surge of life-saving humanitarian aid to the civilians being impacted by this war. The suffering must end.
