Washington, DC – President Trump’s decision to push forward with reckless, haphazard tariffs is the latest example of his contempt for the concerns of everyday Americans. These incoherent, careless actions will drive up costs for American families, on everything from housing to everyday essentials like gas and groceries. They will also harm American businesses and undermine job growth and employment. Already, we have seen tariff-induced market turmoil hit Americans’ retirement accounts to the tune of billions of dollars. Yet President Trump’s message to the American people is loud and clear: he “couldn’t care less.”
“Trump’s trade policy is chaotic protectionism,” said Ambassador Robert Zoellick, former U.S. Trade Representative and member of FP4A’s advisory board. “It would impose a high tax on consumers and businesses that rely on imports. Beyond the direct impact of the tariffs themselves, the constant flip-flops create confusion, adding a cost of uncertainty that impedes planning, especially for small businesses. What’s more the inevitable retaliation – some we’re already seeing – will hurt America’s successful exporters, especially farmers and cutting-edge machinery and services industries.”
Foreign Policy for America urges President Trump to abandon his reckless, ego-driven approach to tariffs and instead focus on lowering prices for American families.
