FP4A Welcomes Nuclear Negotiations Between the United States and Iran

Washington D.C. – Foreign Policy for America welcomes the start of diplomatic talks between the United States and Iran in Oman and is encouraged by the announcement that discussions will continue in Italy. The Trump administration has a historic opportunity to restore limits on Iran’s ability to weaponize its nuclear program.

“U.S. negotiators would do well to ignore the loud voices at home and in the region who outright reject diplomacy and are all too eager to prioritize military strikes on Iran,” says Foreign Policy for America Executive Director Andrew Albertson.

FP4A urges all sides to ensure the environment remains conducive to negotiations, including dialing back military threats. Military strikes on critical nuclear infrastructure in Iran would not destroy Iran’s ability to acquire a nuclear weapon and may harden the Iranian government’s resolve to seek one. Diplomatic negotiations were key to rolling back Iran’s nuclear program once before and can do so again today if negotiators remain focused on that goal.
